Physician-hospital organization
A separate legal entity owned by a hospital and participating physicians, which can contract with insurance companies, HMOs or self-insured employers to provide medical services. The PHO may also undertake utilization review, credentialing and quality assurance. Physicians retain ownership of their own practices, maintain significant business outside the PHO, and typically continue in their traditional practice style.
