Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
The completely unexpected and unexplained death of an appar-ently well infant. SIDS is the most common cause of death between the sec-ond week and first year of life. This syndrome occurs more frequently in the third and fourth months of life, in premature infants, in males, and in infants living in poverty. These deaths usually occur during sleep and are more likely to happen in winter than in summer.
