Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a progressive inflammatory disease of the central ner-vous system that destroys nerve tissue throughout the brain and spinal cord in a patchy, irregular fashion. The disease generally occurs in young adults.

Symptoms vary due to the disease's irregular course, but include: vision difficulties, loss of sensation, slurred speech, loss of memory, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating.

As the disease progresses, motor function deteriorates, resulting in: poor muscle coordination; an unsteady slow gate; and involuntary muscle movements. MS becomes more severe and debilitating with time.

There is evidence of remissions that may last for a year or more, which accounts for the slow progression of this disease.
