  4. Dolan Construction Inc.

May 11--Diversification, ever touted by financial experts as a key to a healthy and balanced portfolio, also has proved a key to growth for Reading-based Dolan Construction Inc.

The firm, a full-service general contractor/construction manager based at 401 S. 13th St., has stayed busy with a schedule of projects ranging from retail and industrial to health care and residential, said Vice President Patrick Dolan.

"We've also seen a significant increase in projects from repeat customers," Dolan said.

Working within roughly a 50-mile radius of its home office, Dolan specializes in turnkey projects, in which it sees a plan through from conception to completion.

Its high rank on the Greater Reading Top 50, in the first year the firm entered, resulted from revenue growth that went from about $8 million in 2005 to $16 million in 2006 and then $20 million last year.

"We had no idea how we'd fare," Dolan said of the ranking. "We knew we had good growth, which is why we participated. We were really thrilled."

Nor has the faltering national economy thus far been a hindrance to that growth.

"People who have need and the ability to grow are choosing to do so," Dolan said. "We're slightly insulated in that aspect.

"We all know the residential market has seen a big hit, but that's primarily been for developers that do large tracts. We don't compete in that area. We do compete in the custom residential market, but again I think that's sort of insulated from the large development market. And we're still seeing as much of that work as we ever have."

Founded in 1977 by company President Joseph E. Dolan, the firm employs 42.
