BRIEF: Pottsville Relay for Life sees single-team fundraiser record
Stephen J. Pytak, Republican & Herald, Pottsville, Pa.

May 11--While the 15th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Pottsville didn't reach its $225,000 fundraising goal, there was an interesting record set during the 24-hour event, which ended at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Boyer's Food Markets team raised $32,022 -- more than any single team in the history of the Pottsville Relay for Life in its 15-year history, according to Chris Reichert, Pine Grove, an American Cancer Society income development specialist.

By 3 p.m. Saturday the event had raised $192,572, Reichert said.

"Considering the weather, it's a phenomenal amount," Reichert said.

Fundraising teams are still submitting donations said Reichert, who is hoping the event receives $200,000. "A lot of teams will turn in money late. They still collect money after the relay," she said.

There were "about 1,500 attendees" at the event, held at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Pottsville. Among those people were 74 fundraising teams. They included The Hopeful Lees, which raised $10,100, and Team Christine, which raised $9,747.

The funds go directly to the American Cancer Society and are used for research and local unit patient services, Reichert said.
