Baillieu blasts cancer in Liberal Party

Victorian Liberal leader Ted Baillieu has pledged to reform the state party and clean out "cancerous elements" after two staff members were sacked for posting damaging comments on a website blog.

Campaign officers Simon Morgan and John Osborn were fired following a secret investigation which found they had contributed to the invitation-only blog, hewhostandsfornothing.blogspot.com, aimed at undermining Mr Baillieu and other leading state and federal Liberal figures.

Mr Baillieu said on Sunday the pair's activities were a disgrace that ran against everything the Liberals stood for, adding they had deliberately and wilfully sought to harm the party and its members.

"At the very heart of our party, we have a cell who have been effectively working for the ALP rather than the Liberal Party," Mr Baillieu said.

"The activities of this cell that has been operating within our party has corrupted our election campaigns and our ability to fight Labor.

"This cell has undermined our efforts to win government. They have undermined and corrupted our party. They have targeted our policies, candidates and branches.

"They have not acted alone. And there will be no cover-up of their activities."

A full investigation into anti-Liberal activities would be the first key task of incoming state director Tony Nutt, who begins his new job on Monday, Mr Baillieu said.

And he warned anyone else found to be involved in anti-Liberal activities within party ranks would also be disciplined.

"It is time to clean house," Mr Baillieu said.

"We have some cancerous elements within our party and they are destroying the Liberal Party for all of its members. We have genuine, deep-seated problems and it is time that we confront them.

"Those who are found to have been involved in these activities will be disciplined.

"The Liberal Party belongs to its members and it belongs to Victoria. I intend to make sure this remains a strong, vibrant and open party, true to its members, true to Victoria and a strong alternative to the ALP."

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the staffers' blog was an example of "gross disloyalty" in the Liberal Party.

"You're talking about gross disloyalty, you're talking about a party that's completely lacking in policy direction, you're talking about a leader that doesn't enjoy the confidence of his party.

"But these are all matters for the Liberal Party, and I don't intend commenting on them," Mr Brumby said on Sunday.
