ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc. (ZIOP) announced that the FDA has granted Orphan Drug
Designation to palifosfamide in the treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS). The
Orphan Drug designation provides eligibility for a seven-year period of market
exclusivity in the United States after product approval, an accelerated review
process, grant funding, tax benefits and an exemption from user fees.
Soft tissue sarcomas can occur anywhere within the body including muscle, fat,
nerves, vascular tissue, and other connective tissues. STS tumors account for
about 1% of all cancers in adults and 10% in children.
