Senator LeMieux on Health Care Effort: "Don't Cut Medicare"
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today spoke out against proposed
cuts to Medicare contained in the House and Senate health care reform proposals.
Both the House bill and the Senate Finance Committee proposal include half a
trillion dollars in cuts to Medicare programs, including Medicare Advantage -
the program that currently has more than 900,000 Florida seniors enrolled.
"No matter what steps we take to reform health care, the Federal government
should not neglect its obligation to our nation's seniors," said LeMieux. "It
amazes me we would take nearly $500 billion dollars out of health care for
seniors. Seniors have paid into this system their entire lives. Reforming health
care to cover one group of Americans should not happen at the expense of
another."
The Democrat-sponsored proposal in the Senate cuts nearly $135 billion from
Medicare Advantage, over $150 billion from hospitals that care for seniors, more
than $51 billion from home health agencies and hospices, and nearly $70 billion
in additional cuts or fee increases.
