Proper Use

Take this medicine regularly for as long as prescribed, even if you feel better. If you are taking it for high blood pressure, you must take it every day to keep your blood pressure under control.

Do not miss a dose, and do not take double doses. If you do miss a dose, take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time.

Captopril with hydrochlorothiazide (Capozide) is best taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Enalapril with hydrochlorothiazide (Vaseretic) and lisinopril with hydrochlorothiazide (Prinzide) may be taken with or without meals.
Please Note

Before you start taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including nonprescription products.

This medicine increases urination. Take the last dose of the day before 6 PM to avoid interrupting your sleep at night.

Do not use salt substitutes containing potassium without your doctor's approval.

If you vomit or have diarrhea while you are taking this medicine, contact your doctor.

This medicine may make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially in hot weather. Do not drive or operate machinery unless you are fully alert.

Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's approval.

Diabetics: This medicine may affect your blood sugar level and change the amount of insulin or other diabetes medicines you may need. Talk to your doctor about this.

Females of childbearing age: This medicine is not usually used during pregnancy because it can harm the baby. Do not become pregnant while you are taking this medicine. If you do become pregnant during treatment, contact your doctor right away. Do not breast-feed an infant you are while taking this medicine.
Possible Side Effects

Serious (report these to your doctor right away): Chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, skin rash, swelling, fever, bruising, mouth sores, sore throat, irregular or fast heartbeat, yellowish eyes or skin.

Other: Stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, headache.

Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.
Possible Drug Interactions

When you take this medicine with other medicines, it may increase or decrease the effects of the medicines. Or the combination may cause harmful side effects. Some medicines that may interact with this medicine are:

  • aspirin
  • digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • indomethacin (Indocin)
  • lithium (Lithonate, Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithane, Lithotabs)
  • other diuretics.

Be sure that you tell all doctors who treat you about all medicines you are taking, including nonprescription products.
